Sara Rosso, an Italo-American blogger and Nutella ® lover, decided to dedicate one day of the year to her favourite spread: so, on February 5th 2007, all Nutella ® lovers were called to unite. Since then, World Nutella ® Day «became a way to celebrate it and also an introduction for a lot of people to try Nutella® for the first time».

That is why today we want to talk about everyone’s favourite spread. Nutella ® is one of the most known and loved chocolate spreads on the planet Earth 🙂 We all love it, but we also know that nowadays the ingredients in the Nutella® sold in stores are not too healthy or most of them we can say are pretty unhealthy. So we decided to come to you with an idea of making a healthy version of Nutella ® at home, and it turns out the recipe is an easy one.

History of Nutella ®

But do you know the story behind the world-known Nutella® brand? Originally, Nutella® was a smart solution to a tricky problem: the shortage of cocoa supplies following World War Two.

You can find a quite interesting story on the brand’s website:

“Pietro Ferrero, a pastry maker from Piedmont in Italy, ingeniously created a sweet paste made from hazelnuts, sugar and just a little of the rare cocoa. He shaped it into a loaf that could be sliced and served on bread and he named it ‘Giandujot’ after a famous local carnival character at the time. On May 14th 1946 the Ferrero Company was officially founded.

The delicious ‘Giandujot’ paste was transformed in 1951 into a new product that could be easily spread on bread; it was called SuperCrema (the precursor to Nutella®).

In 1964 Pietro Ferrero’s son, Michele applied his innovative genius and, by trial and error, he improved the recipe and created the first-ever jar of a new hazelnut and cocoa cream which was, however, still without a name. So he put his creative hat on again and invented the perfect solution for the world’s most famous spread: ‘Nutella®. “

Ingredients for homemade healthy Nutella:

  • 400 g of hazelnuts
  • 250 ml of milk
  • 2 tbsp of cacao powder (dark unsweetened)
  • 3 tbsp of honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp of coconut oil (optional, but recommended)

Method:

  1. You’ll need to peel the hazelnuts first. Don’t worry, it’ll be easy! Just roast the hazelnuts at 250 degrees for about 5 minutes or until you see the hazelnut skin bursts and come off and you can smell the nutty goodness wafting through your kitchen. Next, you place the hot nuts into a cotton kitchen towel and rub the skins off using the towel.
  2. Mix the nuts in the blender for 5-8 minutes with little pauses until the mixture becomes oily. Add milk mixed with vanilla extract, honey, cacao powder and blend it all together for another minute. For perfect texture, we recommend adding coconut oil.
  3. Try, if the spread is sweet enough for you. You can add more honey (or any sweet syrup you prefer) if you like, but try not to overdose 🙂

You can keep the homemade Nutella spread in a well-closed jar up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. Remember always to take a clean knife or spoon for it, so that it won’t have contact with butter or saliva. This will help to preserve it longer.
